The Crew picked up its first preseason victory of 2009 this morning with a 3-1 win over the U.S. Under-20 squad at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. Check out the full match report after the jump.

The Crew tallied its first goal in the 37th minute, when Alejandro Moreno was taken down in the penalty box by a U.S. U-20 defender. As usual, Guillermo Barros Schelotto calmly stepped to the penalty spot and put the Crew up 1-0, for the only score of the first half.

After the first 60 minutes of play, the Crew brought on a completely new line-up for the match’s final third, and the group responded with two goals of its own. In the 74th minute, the Crew’s third round selection in the 2009 SuperDraft, midfielder Alex Grendi, sent in a corner kick which found the head of trialist Anthony Peters, who sent the header into the back of the net for the match’s second goal.

Midfielder Brek Shea, a member of FC Dallas, scored the U-20’s lone goal in the 83rd minute, but the Crew responded with a final goal in the 89th minute when Grendi again sent a corner kick into the mixer. After a brief scrum, Steven Lenhart came away with the ball and blasted a close range shot into the back of the net for the final 3-1 margin.

The Black & Gold will now resume training over the next several days before participating in its final exhibition match in Bradenton on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The Crew will take part in two separate sessions, consisting of two 30-minute halves apiece; first against the University of South Florida at 3 p.m., followed by the University of Tampa at 4 p.m. The squad will then briefly return to Columbus on Feb. 19 before departing for the England leg of its preseason schedule.
