After his two-assist contribution in last Thursday’s victory over Chicago, MVP candidate Guillermo Barros Schelotto has been honored with the final MLS Player of the Week honor for 2008 as he was voted the MLS Cup Playoffs Player of the Week. Last Thursday’s performance was the eighth match this season in which Guille has had two assists. The POTW honor is Guille’s fifth this season.

The hits just keep on coming for Crew playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who has been voted the MLS Player of the Week for Week 24 after his one goal, two assist masterpiece against New England last Saturday (Sept. 6). Schelotto’s performance helped improve the Crew to 13-6-4 (43 points) on the season and, giving them a five-point lead atop the Eastern Conference. The Award is Schelotto’s fourth Player of the Week award of 2008 (Weeks 3, 17 & 22), after earning the honor twice in 2007. Major League Soccer announced today the selection of Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto as MLS Player of the Month for August after recording six assists and one goal while leading the Crew to a 3-1-0 record during the month. Columbus holds the top record in the League at 12-6-4, and with 40 points the club sits two points ahead of the New England Revolution. Since joining the Crew in 2007 from storied Argentinean club Boca Juniors, Schelotto has proven to be one of the best attacking players in the League. He was a member of the 2007 MLS Best XI and in 44 career MLS games, he’s recorded a whopping 27 assists and registered 11 goals. His 16 assists this season are the most for an individual in MLS since the 2003 season when Preki recorded 17. With eight games remaining in the season, the Crew have already recorded three more wins and three more points than in 2007 when they finished with a 9-11-10 record with 37 points and missed the playoffs. Schelotto and the Crew are back in action this Saturday, Sept. 6 when they host the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven notched his first goal of the season in the Crew’s 2-1 victory over FC Dallas last Saturday (Aug. 30), and his tally has earned consideration for Sierra Mist GOTW for Week 23. Thanks to a classy move and pinpoint service by Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Gaven deposited the game-winner into the back of the net in the 40th minute:

Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto was voted as Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week for Week 22 of the 2008 season, after scoring a goal and tallying two assists in the Crew’s decisive 3-0 victory over Real Salt Lake last Saturday, Aug. 23, at Crew Stadium.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
